Make sure that the courses you choose do not overlap and that they are taught during your participation in the program (please check dates carefully)!

8:00a.m. - 1.30p.m:
PLI Intensive Polish Language 8:00am-1:30 pm An intensive language course designed to build a firm linguistic foundation. Three and Four week programs: 75 hours, 5 credits. Six week program: 120 hours, 8 credits

8:00a.m. - 10a.m:
PL Non-Intensive Polish Language 8:00am-10:30am A course designed to introduce students to the Polish language or to improve the knowledge of Polish they already possess. 45 hours, 3 credits *This class is only available on the four week program.

On the first day of the program participants are tested to be placed one of eight levels from survival polish to native speaker. Level changes and group transfers are possible within two to three days after the placement test. Later transfers are possible after a consultation with the Director of the Polish Language Program.

11:00am-1:30pm:

ART Polish Art: Past and Present
The development of Polish art since the 10th c. Special emphasis will be placed on the importance of Poland within Europe, including the formative effects of geopolitcs on the development of Polish artistic movements, Polish church art, folk art, poster and architecture. In-depth art history lectures will be conducted both at the University and in museums. The course will be accompanied by a program of field trips.
*This class is only available on the four week program for students taking PL Non-Intensive Polish Language. NOTE: Limited admission, on a first come, first served basis.
July 2–24; 45 hours, 3 credits/3 ECTS points

3:00–4:30 p.m:

HIST History of Poland: from Kingdom to Third Republic
A survey of  Polish history  from the Piast dynasty through the period of Jagiellonian rule, the time of the elected kings, 123 years of partitioned Poland, the 1920's and 1930's, World War II, the creation and functioning of the People's Republic, the collapse of the communist system.

July 2-20; 30 hours, 2 credits/2 ECTS points

HISTPL Historia Polski (in Polish)
Zarys historii Polski od dynastii Piastow, poprzez epoke Jagiellonow, krolow elekcyjnych, rozbiory, II wojne swiatowa, powstanie i funkcjonowanie Polskiej Rzeczypospolitej Ludowej - po upadek systemu komunistycznego.
2-20 lipca; 30 godzin, 2 punkty kredytowe/2 punkty ECTS

JEWS The Jews in Poland
This course will make students familiar with the long and glorious history of Jewish communities in Poland as well as with the period from 1939 to 1945 (the Holocaust). Post-Holocaust history of the Jews and Jewish culture in Poland will also be covered, with emphasis on Jewish-non-Jewish relations and anti-Semitism, and recent revival of the Jewish life in Poland.

KULT Polska kultura wspolczesna
Prezentacja najwazniejszych zjawisk i przemian w polskiej kulturze (literatura, film, teatr, muzyka, malarstwo, rzezba, media…) od upadku komunizmu (1989) po czas obecny. W ramach wykladow fragmenty filmow, przedstawien teatralnych, utworow muzycznych.
23 lipca–1 sierpnia; 15 godzin, 1 punkt kredytowy/1 punkt ECTS

POL Dlaczego ten jezyk jest taki skomplikowany? (in Polish) 
Kurs teoretyczny dla osob zainteresowanych jezykiem polskim. Wyklady dotycza cech charakterystycznych struktury jezykowej, skladni, odmian stylistycznych polszczyzny i tendencji rozwo-jowych slownictwa wspolczesnego jezyka polskiego.
12-20 lipca; 15 godzin, 1 punkt kredytowy/1 punkt ECTS

RLS Polish in Real-Life Situations
Practical exercises which enable the participants to hone their Polish language skills in reallife situations, exploiting the grammar and vocabulary learned during lectures in actual conversations with Poles, outside of the confines of study halls. Courses are offered at all levels of proficiency and take advantage of multimedia aids as well as Internet-based sources.

SOC Contemporary Poland and Her Society in the 21st Century
Since 1989 Poland has been officially a free market democracy with a civic society. Yet while economic and political changes are relatively easy to engineer, the social ones are much harder and take much longer. This course will present contemporary Polish society, noting remnants from the past, examining evidence of deeper transformations already accomplished, and predicting negative and positive trends developing into the future.
July 23-August 1; 15 hours; 1 credit/1 ECTS point

5:00–6:30 p.m:

CULT Polish Culture: Lessons in Polish Literature
A presentation of some of the most interesting problems in the thousand-year history of Polish culture, with special emphasis on themes related to national existence. Literary masterpieces of the past and present, including poetry of the two Nobel Prize winners - Czeslaw Milosz (1980) and Wislawa Szymborska (1996); Polish Romanticism; culture in a political context; the phenomenon of exiled culture; literature and totalitarianism, and other "great questions" of Polish culture will be discussed.
July 2-20; 30 hours, 2 credits/2 ECTS points

GRAM Polish Grammar
A series of lectures on the structure of the Polish language - its morphology and syntax, in English. The lecturer will let you know everything about the Polish grammar you always wanted to know but never had any occasion to ask.
July 23-August 10; 30 hours, 2 credits/2 ECTS points

LIT1 Literatura Polska (in Polish)
Najwazniejsze zjawiska w polskiej literaturze wspolczesnej. Dwudziestolecie miedzywojenne: dziela Witkacego, Schulza, Gombrowicza. Poezja Milosza
i Szymborskiej (Nagrody Nobla w dziedzinie literatury). Literatura wobec Holocaustu. Kultura na obczyznie. Wspolczesna poezja.
2-20 lipca; 30 godzin, 2 punkty kredytowe/2 punkty ECTS

PD Polen-Deutschland 1989-2012: Nachbarschaft und gegenseitige Zusammenarbeit
(in German)
Beschreibung der 30-jahrigen polnisch-deutschen Zusammenarbeit: Kultur, Politik, Austausch, Edukation, Moglichkeiten fur neue Projekte.
23. Juli-10. August; 15 Stunden, 1 ECTS-Punkt

TRANS Communism and Post-Communist Transformation in East-Central Europe
The course focuses on historical, political, economic and social dimensions of the major processes that have taken place in Poland and other European countries since the 1980s. The discussion will touch upon the communist system and its collapse, the economy in transition, and social changes in post-communist countries. The focal point of the discussion is Poland. Other countries, most notably Russia and the Czech Republic, will be used for comparative purposes. 30 hours, 2 credits

SCE Kurs przygotowawczy do zdawania panstwowego egzaminu certyfikatowego (in Polish)
Kurs przeznaczony jest dla studentow zainteresowanych zdawaniem Panstwowego Egzaminu Certyfikatowego z Jezyka Polskiego jako Obcego. Uczestnicy zapoznani zostana z technikami zdawania sprawnosci jezykowych (gramatyka, pisanie, czytanie, mowienie i rozumienie ze sluchu) testowanych na egzaminie certyfikatowym. Na zakonczenie sluchacze beda mogli rozwiazac probny egzamin certyfikatowy. Zajecia prowadzone przez wykwalifikowanych instrukTorow, bioracych udzial w pracach Panstwowej Komisji Certyfikatowej.



8:30 p.m:
FILM Polish Film: Selected Topics; Several video presentations of the most outstanding Polish films: from the classics of Andrzej Wajda to the most recent releases; plus introductions or handouts. The films are analysed using a variety of criteria that reveal individual styles of their directors.
July 5-August 6; no credits.


What courses can you take?

It is up to you. You may take Polish in the morning and electives in the afternoon or you may take just Polish or just electives. The choice is yours!

This program allows you to tailor the progam to your needs and interests. The program fee covers as many courses as you would like as long as there is not a scheduling conflict.
